Noise Makers:

How many car alarms can you set off? My personal record is 18 in a closed parking lot with my modified Miata. I figured all records need to be challenged. I do not care much for the quiet rumble of the EURO GTS pipes that came with the car. They are also quite restrictive. So, off to call in a favor from past adventures. I visited my buddies at Mel and Son's in Concord, CA. We removed the stock pipes and fabricated new 3 inch pipes from the collectors to tail flowing through a pair of 2 chamber flowmaster muff's...

The challenge with this project was the fitment of the new muff's. I opted to keep the GTS headers and mate the newly fabricated assembly to the GTS factory flanges. The muff's needed to be "cut" to allow clearance for the new 345/35 tires that will be mounted on 15x14 wheels for the impending cosmetics.

We had to cut the inner corner off the muffler and weld in a new "inverted" corner. The rough in is pictured below.

After some cleaning up of the edges with a grinding wheel, we were ready to start fitting it up the car.

The fun part of the project was to fitting the new system around the Group 4 sway bar brackets. They rise quite a bit above the lower a arm assembly. There isn't much room for error. The boys at the shop are pro's so....no worries.

The clearance between the exhaust system and the tires mounted on the car is perfect. Suspension has room to travel up and down with no obstructions. The pipes were run as far inward as possible to allow for movement.

The final product. It sounds as good as it looks! The open mufflers allow very little backpressure and a nice healthy rumble. Not too loud.....the car has a real nice "bark" when revved up over 3500 RPM.
