I got my grubby little hands on 3988 on October 1st, 2000. What is the first thing I do? Put her on the dyno and define the starting point to my madness. Those of you who know me understand what I mean. I like to tinker a bit.

She put out 259 HP and 270 ft lbs Not too shabby for a stock 1972 Pantera. As some you know, I can't leave well enough alone. The initial round of upgrades included:

  • Fluidine radiator
  • Recharge/Repair AC
  • Euro T/A tires to replace the crap that was on there.
  • Brake master cylinder
  • Fix the tranny leak (front input shaft seal)
  • odds and ends (switches and other consumables)

The next evolution included some performance oriented upgrades.

  • Group 4 sway bars front and rear from Collectors Choice.
  • Carrera adjustable aluminum shocks
  • Corner weighted and aligned the car
  • Demon 650
  • polished dual plane manifold
  • MSD Pro-Billet dizzy
  • MSD 6a
  • Taylor 10 MM wires
  • 150 shot of NOS
  • Rebuilt steering rack

The alignment story can be found on Chuck Melton's web site. click here for the story!

Next I paid some needed attention to the creature comforts.

  • Corvette seats retrofit
  • Replaced headliner
  • Added a rear delta wing
  • Added a front chin spoiler
  • Billet radiator and overflow bottles from www.jhpmotorsports.com

That takes us to the next level. The car is starting to look meaner, handle much better and perform up to my expectations.

I got a chance to test out my suspension setup at the annual Las Vegas convention this year. Most of my time was spent instructing drivers at LVMS. I managed to get a few sessions in on both the euro T/A tires and some borrowed slicks.

(Thank you to Charlie Puckett for the loaner!)

I was quite happy with the new shock/spring/sway bar combo after switching to the slicks. The euro's are too large for the 15x8 rears and the wheel will move side to side under load within the tire.
